Tick, tock!  It’s time to teach your students about Spanish time.  This post is chock full of great ideas for Spanish time activities, lesson plans, and resources so that your students will master telling time, pronouncing time correctly, and spelling Spanish time expressions.  Be sure to grab your free Spanish time worksheets, too!

Spanish Time: Hours

¿Qué hora es? – What time is it?
1:00 – Es la una.
 * Use Es la because 1 is singular. 
** Use una not uno because it’s referring to hour (hora) which is feminine.
2:00 – Son las dos.
3:00 – Son las tres.
4:00 – Son las cuatro.
5:00 – Son las cinco.
6:00 – Son las seis.
7:00 – Son las siete.
8:00 – Son las ocho.
9:00 – Son las nueve.
10:00 – Son las diez.
11:00 – Son las once.
12:00 – Son las doce.

Es mediodía. – It’s noon.
Es medianoche. – It’s midnight.

de la mañana – in the morning
de la tarde – in the afternoon (until 6PM)
de la noche – in the evening, nighttime (after 6PM)

Spanish Time: Quarter Hours

y cuarto – 15                                          3:15  Son las tres y cuarto.               11:15  Son las once y cuarto.

y media –  30                                         1:30  Es la una y media.                     7:30   Son las siete y media.

(next hour) + menos cuarto – 45

    8:45 – Son las nueve menos cuarto.

    2:45  Son las tres menos cuarto.

Spanish Time: Minutes 1-29

First, let’s review numbers 1-29.

To form time with minutes 1-29, add “y” + the number.

1:05 – Es la una y cinco.
4:17 – Son las cuatro y diecisiete.
12:29 – Son las doce y veintinueve.

Spanish Time: Minutes 31-59

Let’s review numbers 31-59.

To form time with minutes 31-59, use the next hour and menos + the number.

2:55 – Son las tres menos cinco.
6:47 – Son las siete menos trece.
10:36 – Son las once menos veinticuatro.

3 Ways to Tell Time in Spanish

Did you know that there are actually 3 ways to tell time in Spanish for minutes 31-59?

1.  y + the number.
   3:34 – Son las tres y treinta y cuatro.
2.  The next hour + menos + the number.
   3:34 – Son las cuatro menos veintiséis.
   
3. The number + para las + the next hour.
   3:34 – Son las veintiséis para las cuatro.

Useful Expressions for Spanish Time

la hora – 1.  time (talking about time as a theme)
          Vamos a estudiar la hora en la clase de español.
           We are going to study time in Spanish class.
la hora – 2.  the hour
          ¿Qué hora es?
           What time is it?  (Literally – what hour is it?)
tiempo – time (in general as a concept)
         ¿Pasas mucho tiempo con tus amigos?
          Do you spend a lot of time with your friends?
         En mi tiempo libre, me gusta leer y mirar películas.
          In my free time, I like to read and watch movies.
en punto – on the dot, exactly at that time, right at
         La clase empieza a las diez en punto. 
          The class starts right at ten o’clock.
tarde – late
         Mateo siempre llega tarde.
          Mateo always arrives late.
temprano – early
         Sofía se levanta temprano cada mañana.
          Sofía gets up early every morning.
¿Cuándo empieza . . .? – When does ________ start?
         ¿Cuándo empieza tu lección de piano?
          When does your piano lesson start?
¿A qué hora termina . . .? – At what time does ________ end?
         ¿A qué hora termina tu práctica?
          When does your practice end?

Spanish Time Activities

 1. Post clock photos around the room.  Students walk around and write the times.

2.  Talk about time in different parts of the world.

Ex.  Si son las diez y media en Nueva York, ¿qué hora es en Madrid?  ¿En Buenos Aires? 

3. Ask students what time they wake up, get up, and go to bed.

Teach a few simple reflexive verbs as vocabulary (trust me – your students can handle it and you’ll be happy you did it later on when you teach reflexive verbs and they already know how to use some).   Have them create a mini google presentation with photos and sentences.¿A qué hora te despiertas?  Me despierto a las siete.
¿Cuándo te levantas?   Me levanto a las siete y media.
¿A qué hora desayunas, almuerzas, cenas?    Desayuno a las ocho.  Almuerzo a las doce.  Ceno a las seis.
¿Cuándo te acuestas?  Me acuesto a las nueve y media.

Assign each student a poll question and have them collect data and make a graph to talk about in class.  Use any of the questions above.

4.  Ask students when they have certain classes or activities.

¿A qué hora empieza la clase de ciencias?
